Is Electric Heating the Future for Sustainability?

There are many different ways that you can reduce the energy that is used (and wasted) in your home, including insulating your property and ensuring that you are only using energy when you really need it.

This not only is better for the environment, but it also can be a very effective way to reduce the amount of money that you are paying on your energy bills – something that is becoming increasingly important.

Another excellent method for helping the planet and reducing the amount of energy that you are using is by installing electric heating through a smart heating system. This is being seen as the future of heating system sustainability, a way to help you and help the planet, and also brings heating systems in line with modern technology and its capabilities.

WHAT IS INTELLIGENT HEATING?

Smart or intelligent heating involves the use of electrical radiators that are controlled by an app on a remote device such as a mobile phone and communicate through your Wi-Fi. The electrical radiators have a smart thermostat attached to them, meaning that you can control when it is turned on and off as well as its temperature from your phone.

Smart heating systems also have other features that give you the high level of control that we all look for today, including zoning areas within the building to give them their unique heating controls as well as the ability to learn from your actions and geofencing.

Up until recently, houses have been heated using traditional radiators that are powered by gas and filled with hot water to heat the room that they are in. These are actually a very inefficient way to heat a room.  Electrical radiators in the past have been mainly used as a portable heater that can be plugged in and moved around according to the area that you wish to heat, but these electrical radiators work in your central heating system.

Today, electrical radiators have become increasingly used to replace these traditional radiators. They can eliminate the issues that are associated with gas (gas leaks, regular maintenance checks, and the need for certificates), are less clunky than traditional radiators, and are often more attractive to look at – they are often available in a range of different radiator models.

Electrical radiators are the contemporary alternative, looking great, helping you to save money, and giving you more control over how, where, and when they are used (through smart technology).

ARE ELECTRIC RADIATORS THE FUTURE?

Electric radiators are said to be the future of home heating for a number of different reasons. These include:

  • They are very efficient – in other words, they don’t take time to warm up, and no heat is wasted in pipes or the transportation of the heat to the heater. This means that the entire system is more efficient than a traditional one.
  • Gas boilers deteriorate relatively quickly with age, becoming increasingly inefficient – unlike an electric radiator system that does not deteriorate and can last a lifetime.
  • Zoning can be applied to mean that different parts of the house can be independently heated whilst other areas are not heated.
  • Electricity is the cleanest energy source option for the environment
  • Electric radiators can be used in conjunction with other smart devices in the home to give you remote control over them, enabling you to adjust your heating just by talking to other devices.
  • Geofencing is also a possibility, meaning that you do not even need to think about your heating.

They Can Connect via Wi-Fi

Smart heating systems are connected to your property’s Wi-Fi, which enables the smart thermostats to communicate with the app device. This means that real-time data is sent to the app, enabling you to understand the heating situation in the room, then adjust it accordingly through the app, which then communicates back to the smart thermostat on the heater.

It also means that smart meters are able to communicate in real-time with your energy company to ensure that you are paying accurate energy bills (no more estimates!) and smart thermostats can also communicate with and act according to the messages sent by your home device such as a Google Home, Amazon Echo, Apple HomeKit, and Microsoft Cortana.

The technology uses smart learning and the Internet of things to understand what you need, and when, and give this to you with the least amount of effort required.

Automatically Adjustable

A smart heating system has an automatically adjustable thermostat, meaning that you can set the desired room temperature and the system will activate the electric heating accordingly – much like the cruise control on a car. This will help to maintain a continual temperature in the room, rather than the up and down that you often get with a traditional heating system.

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats can be used to adjust the temperature of the room through a number of different methods. It can measure the temperature and activate the radiator – or turn it off if needed, it can also enable you to control the temperature differently in different areas of the house and can build a geofence that senses when you are close to the property or not, or you can control it manually.

All of this can be controlled through an app on your mobile phone or another device.

Smart heating systems can also be used to sense whether you have a window or door open. Open windows and doors can mean a lot of energy wastage and unnecessary heating. With intelligent temperature change technology, the electric heating system can detect the sudden drops in temperature that are associated with it and ensure that the heating is turned off to avoid wasting energy.

The concept of ‘geofencing’ is that a virtual barrier is set up around your property. This means that the smart heating system can detect when you are at home, and turn the heating on or off accordingly, meaning that there is less wastage and your energy bills can be kept down.

ARE ELECTRIC RADIATORS GOING TO REPLACE GAS BOILERS?

The ideal for the future is to create a greener world, with a lower impact on the environment. The government has a target of achieving zero carbon by 2050, and it is essential that we all continue to do what we can to reduce our carbon footprints both individually and as a group.

At the moment, all new build houses are being fitted with smart, electric heaters, but as of yet, there is no requirement to retrofit existing properties. However, it is likely that as these systems become better known, the cost of living rises, and the public becomes more aware of the cost of energy and its effect on the environment, demand will rise for retrofitting electric radiators.
