Millions of UK households are set to see a welcome drop in their energy bills from the start of April, as the government’s recent announcement on energy costs takes effect. After mounting pressures on domestic energy use over recent years, this latest shift brings some much-needed relief for families and individuals alike.
From 1 April, the energy price cap – the limit on what suppliers can charge for gas and electricity on default tariffs – will fall by around 7%. That works out as roughly £117 off the typical annual bill for an average UK household paying by direct debit, equivalent to around £10 per month saved.
At the heart of this reduction is a government decision to remove certain policy costs from energy bills and fund them through general taxation instead. Measures such as ending funding for the Energy Company Obligation and cutting much of the Renewables Obligation scheme costs out of domestic bills will help to deliver about £150 of savings on average. Suppliers are expected to reflect these changes automatically, so you won’t need to apply or take any action to benefit.
For HeatElectric customers, this is a meaningful development. Lowering the price cap means that your everyday energy use, including running electric heating systems, heat pumps, and other electric appliances, should cost less on paper from April. If you’re already on a fixed price tariff, providers will adjust unit rates so you receive your share of the savings as the new cap comes in. If you’re on a prepayment meter or a different tariff type, the changes still apply and will be implemented automatically by your supplier.
Although this reduction is good news, there’s an important nuance. The overall saving for each household will depend on individual energy use, tariff type, and how consumption patterns evolve over time. And while this cut eases some of the financial pressure, average bills still remain significantly higher than they were before the energy crisis began.
We believe in helping our customers get the most from every penny spent on energy. Whether you’re considering installing a renewable energy system, looking at your tariff options, or planning energy efficiency upgrades, understanding how broader changes to the energy market affect your costs is essential.
If you’re thinking about switching tariffs or investing in a more efficient home energy setup, this could be an opportune moment. The headroom created by lower price caps can make investments in low-carbon heating technologies, such as solar panels and home battery storage, even more attractive in the long term. As energy systems continue to evolve, staying informed about changes like these can help you make smarter choices for your home and your budget.
If you’d like tailored advice on how these changes impact your specific circumstances, or you want to explore how a HeatElectric system could contribute to lower energy costs overall, our team at HeatElectric is here to help.
